University of Tennessee Chattanooga, Accepts Black-Owned Business into the fold

Three judges from local businesses awarded Devin Lay, a business management major from Memphis, the $1,500 first prize for his SinceBirth Apparel. The competition, sponsored by the Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, took place Nov. 2 in the Mapp Building.

The Black-owned company sells T-shirts, hoodies and hats adorned with such messages as “African Since Birth,” “Born Different” and “Passion = Prospect.”

From artist to entrepreneur, Devin Lay grows fashion business on UTC campus

Lay expanded his artistic vision and moved into making clothes, developing his “African Since Birth” niche line and marketing it with renewed zeal (“One Shirt, One Dream”) and a personal cultural connection. Plus, he said, “No matter what the market, people want something personalized. People like to show their individuality.”
